New Captain on the Block: Captain Szarko, February 22, 2019

Please join Pierce County Fire District 13 in welcoming our new Administrative Captain Luis Szarko! (Most kids know him as Captain Sharky when they come to visit the fire department.)

May contain: officer, person, police officer, adult, male, man, and flag

Q: How long have you been in the fire service?

A: I have been in the fire service since 2005

Q: Why did you want to become a FF?

A: When I was 9 years old my family and I experienced a horrific event when our house caught on fire while we were home. We lost everything and our house was a total loss. The only thing we had was the clothes on our backs. The Federal Way Fire Department now known as South King Fire responded to our address and took good care of us. They helped us get situated in a shelter for the time being and followed up to assure we were in good hands. Since then I had gotten to know them very well. My interest developed more and I continued to pursue that career path.

Q: How long with PCFD13?

A: I started with PCFD13 on February 2018

Q: What is your most memorable experience as a FF?

A: Assisting with a baby delivery on the side of Highway 167.

May contain: blazer, clothing, coat, jacket, face, head, person, photography, portrait, accessories, formal wear, tie, people, adult, male, man, flag, american flag, suit, glasses, electrical device, and microphone

Q: What do you like about BP/DP?

A: I like how involved the department is with the community and it's citizens. This department is all about family and taking care of its own.

Q: Something unique about me?

A: When in water I cannot float causing me to sink to the bottom. That was discovered on my honeymoon when wife and I were in the ocean attempting to swim. Lesson learned!!!!

Come visit us at Browns Point Fire Department and meet our new administrative captain!
